welcome to the Intercellular journey

"All I ever wanted was Jazz, in its most wide and transformative sense, not as a style, but as an experience, a journey of discovery"

It's October 2021, in Berlin, sick of the creative draft that the lockdown has left behind, I do a call on the web that says: Looking for brave souls to record long solos to my electronic tracks. I got replies from around the world, finally 30 musicians stayed and took the intercellular adventure with me.

Little did I expect that the improvisations I received would be a totally fresh and personal interpretation of the songs, and that the quality and courage of those amazing musicians would open multiple pathways to the unknown, forcing my preconceived ideas to dissolve and challenging my mind to stay open, to listen, having to cross into the mystery of collective creation.

Each song has taken around a year of labour, all musicians participated for free,

to keep this dream going, feel welcomed to fuel this project with your donation. Thank you.

Soma

From Soma's original loop there is nothing left, the solos of Peter, Simon, Lyndon and Jamie transformed immediately the initial conception. Ralph's nostalgic brass section at the intro completed the discovery and the intro and the outro got to life. Alessio on double bass opened the multiverse and Collin painted it with several synth layers, Chris on marimba gently took the ride around, all of it sensually warmed up by Adelacha Warminti spoken voice, I myself added up my voice and electric guitar from minute 15... A journey from Caribbean sounds to Acid Jazz, Balearic House to end with an emo Trip Hop outro that nobody really played to... Soma, the first Intercellular experience...

Musicians on this song:

Peter Rosie

Peter Rosie’s electric guitar improvisation was my first surprise to arrive, his precision and speed on his playing was delightful, and it gave me the first impression that the project would be of really high musical quality. Peter is a British jazz guitarist and music teacher. He graduated from the Jazz Pathway at Leeds Conservatoire in 2014. He has performed all over Europe and America. Currently, Peter teaches at a British International School in Budapest, Hungary and collaborates with local jazz and contemporary classical musicians. Here is a link to his music on Soundcloud:

Jamie Bullock

Jamie Bullock on Rhodes piano and Moog synth was the next one to let my mouth open with his playing, his groove and coolness was outstanding, a strong Afro Caribbean feeling as a personal touch, and his great vibes brought a fresh air to the project, very needed at my beginnings, fully loaded of responsibility on having embarked in such a huge challenge. Jamie comes from a musical family playing piano since age 7, studied music at Virginia Tech University mentored by Chip McNeil. Since have recorded, composed and arranged for many artists across the USA, winning many awards for his work, he currently plays keyboards for Los Angeles funk rock band, Zen Robbi and The Gyrators, Outside composing, Jamie helped rebuild the Rhodes Music Corporation, bringing back the original Rhodes electric piano. He currently lives in London, United Kingdom. Here is a link to his work and music:

Lyndon Owen

Lyndon Owen on Sax drew the cinematic build up in the intro, his elegant and personal touch imprinted that personality that only sax has, he thought I would use loops as the classical house producers do, but I was looking for impros, so I used all his licks and that came along perfectly. Lyndon focuses on tenor and soprano sax, also playing a wide variety of wind instruments from throughout Europe and the Middle East. An improvising musician in jazz, world music, contemporary classical, dance music and free experimental work. He has also undertaken various recording work including commercially successful folk, rockabilly and dance pieces. As a composer, he has written extensively for his own performance projects and films… His current working bands are: Plague Doctors Cure All, Coltrane Dedication, EIRA/snow. Here is a link to his extended bio, art and work:

Simon Fil

Simon Fil on electric violin flipped the song upside down with his southeast Asian vibes. His solo drew beaches and ecstatic sunsets, providing those deep emotional waters that merge so well with Ralph brass section during the intro and outro. It is special for me to mention that the outro of the song was never there, so that last solo of Simon and the whole tension of that part was the result of the remnants of the tracks not used during the song, that all together resulted from that epic outro. Originally from the Philippines, Simon has developed an extensive career as musician and producer, residing in Hong Kong since 2015 he plays and composes for different art scenes.

Ralph Burrows

Ralph Burrows on the brass section was brilliant to ground the whole flight during the intro into those Caribbean vibes, I intentionally mixed his tracks to sound like those old Jamaican brass sections back in the 70s. His approach definitely wrapped the free spirit into a body we call a song, He put bones and skin to the many organs living inside. Ralph has played trumpet for over 50 years. He loves all styles but tends to be happiest when blending varied genres. At the overlap of jazz, middle eastern, reggae, classical with a touch of funk and rock sound like a good place to find him at his happiest. Trumpet is an instrument with ancient roots, but Ralph loves experimenting with electronic sound effects to enhance his sound. Ralph plays with all sorts of groups but also is a committed teacher of brass instruments. He wants the new generations to learn from, carry on and improve the works of the brass masters that he has inherited from. Here is a link for his work:

Alessio Campanozzi

Alessio Campanozzi on double bass was the main mind cracker, Alessio's courage and enthusiasm in understanding the openness of my invitation was real, he just took the 20 minutes ride and let himself feel at home and that was as comforting as challenging for me, I had to really listen and open my brain to his ideas, he was definitely not playing along, he was creating, and taking me to so many places that I had to stop and study, feel and as a blind person, decode those pathways to stay in the ICJC philosophy of collective creation. Alessio studied classical music in Bari and at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, and perfected himself in jazz music by studying with Francesco Angiuli, Maurizio Quintavalle, Bart de Nolf, and following masterclasses with Rufus Reid, Ian Shaw and Sarah Jane Morris. He collaborates or has collaborated as a session musician with various projects: internationally with Andrea Bocelli, Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, the Belgian jazz groups Orchester Toubab and Uzivati, on Princess Cruises with artists such as Bobby Brooks Wilson, Elaine Gray, Kate Gordon, Nathan Foley; on a national level with Davide De Marinis labels Digressione, Os Argonautas, Pietro Verna, Southern Wheat, Hat in the Garrett. In addition to his profession as a performer, he has several jobs under his belt as a composer of soundtracks for commercials, short films and documentaries. Colin Flynn

Colin Flynn on synths was another mystery of the love for music, Collin sent me around 7 different tracks with different instruments and styles, I would listen to them for the first month and I didn't know where to put them but as the song grew and the parts started to show them self Colin's impros started to show their personality and importance, being now one of the conductors of the story and different scens of the song. Over 40 years as a (mostly part-time) musician, songwriter, and producer working and writing all over the world. Primarily a guitar player, but also manage to play keyboards and drums. Raised on Steely Dan, Debussy, and Led Zeppelin, so eclectic in his influences. Enjoy working and writing with a wide range of musicians and styles, and praying for the day writers and musicians can earn a living again. Most recently, He is collaborating with Erin Bode, a well-known US artist.

Chris Colaneri

Chris Colaneri on Marimba and Vibes, was another astonishing gift, his grooves and speed just blew my mind, so charged with joy and intention, just good vibes, the song was already there when Chris came in so he was one of the few that played to the song as it really is, with except of the outro that never existed and just happened out of the rests of the impro tracks from everyone. Chris is a well sought after New Jersey based percussionist, author, clinician, composer and educator. Chris specializes in jazz vibraphone/marimba, steel pan, classical percussion and world percussion. He has performed with Josh Groban, Cindi Lauper, Itzak Pearlman, Symphonic Jerry Garcia featuring Waren Haynes, Il Volo, John Mayer's Band, Rita Wilson and many more. Here is the link to his work:

Adelacha Warminti

Adelacha Warminti on spoken voice was also one of the first collaborators to respond, on the first recording she sent me, I noticed the velvety sensual character on her voice, and since she is French, and french has always been to me the most sensual language in the world, I proposed to her to do an interpretation of someone whispering in his favorite lover's ear. Adelacha is a multidisciplinar artist engaged in music, theater, shamanism and universal healing. She collaborates in different musical projects in France and India and spreads the winds of the new times as an nomadic traveler. For contact or further info:

Matias Coulon

Matias Coulon on sound design, composer, producer, voice and electric guitar. My labor has been mainly listening to all those amazing musicians and clearing up space from my original loop for their track to shine. After understanding and digesting their approach, I started building up around them. This hasn't been easy since I had to free my mind from myself, I had to sit and listen and allow their genius to guide me, which with time has gifted me with the generosity of collective creation. I have invested countless hours on each track of impros to give them the ambience and necessary effects to succeed in every sensation each part has, and as the song name states, this is a somatic experience, it is a song to be listened to with the whole body. In this song i have played electric guitar and added my voice from minute 15 on...

Producers

In this last year of producing I have been backed up by Jose Ascui as technical producer, giving me guidance on how to finilize the songs. José reside in Chile where he has an audio and musical production academy and studio. He is the founder of two labels, Quantum Cell Records and Quantum Forest Records and fully active with his artistic projects Dejalum and Joselito. Besides Joseʼs help, i have been lucky to meet Luis Aros Vidal (Lucho) and José Angel Roig (Patxi), which the first as technical producer and the second as sound engeneer have mastered and fully finalized the song with me. “Estudios Bonus” is in Talamanca de Jarama, Spain, of the company Bonus Artes Audiovisual S. L.

Soma

Fire Air

Fire Air was a raw diamond i tried my best to shape, i am so grateful to every musician that played to this track for their interpretations, I really mean it, what a display of talent and style. Starting with Mattias awesome harmonica, Jimi and Tasos on guitars, Jamie on keyboards and Pedro on sax, Alessio double bass both Pablo Serrano on drums and Pablo Rozas on acordeon dressing up the scenes, all of them so brilliant, giving life to this trip hop jazz ballad ride. The track has come together really cohesive, when the truth is most musicians never heard what the others were playing, and as Jimi Durso said, it sounds as if everyone was playing together. There is so much to say but I just want to invite you to listen and journey into the guts of life, the pain, the strength and the victory of focused intention.

Musicians on this song:

Mattias Ernst

Mattias Ernst on harmonica drew the whole narrative that all of us went to complete, his soulful playing just settled the direction the ship would travel through. As an experienced captian that has sailed the seven seas, he knows exactly where we want to go. Mattias Born in 1977, grew up in Cameroon, with Swiss/ Swedish Nationality. Married since 2000 and father to three already or almost grown-up’s. He is a special needs educator and school director from Switzerland. He likes to share his passion and understanding for the diatonic harmonica (both standard and alternative tunings) with anyone interested in expanding their own horizon. His focus in teaching lies on user-friendly approaches to developing musical concepts and technical skills used for entertaining and stunning solo performances. Find more about him in his homepage:

Jimi Durso

Jimi Durso on rocking electric guitar and Guzheng, Chinese instrument, brought that Asian and rocky 70s vibes I am constantly brewing within the project. Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jimi “Twang!” Durso first became passionate about music upon hearing Jimi Hendrix in junior high-school (hence the spelling of his name). Growing up in a small town in upstate New York, with no access to instruction, he set about trying to emulate the blues and blues-based music he’d fallen in love with. This soon lead to the discovery of jazz, reggae, salsa, metal, folk, classical, and even hidustani sounds, all of which he tried to absorb and include in his musical vision. Jimi has recorded, performed with, and been part of many different musical groups, including ska groups the Scofflaws, the Toasters, RBC, and Defactos, jazz artists such as Ray Anderson, T.K. Blue, John Abercrombie, and Piltdown Man, as well as indie rock groups such as Erratic Sculpture and PUD. He currently performs and records with the multi-stylistic Coincidence Machine, which is a showcase for the music he writes. For his work and music, visit:

Tasos Gkoumas

Tasos Gkoumas plays free jazz electric guitar, opening pathways to the infinity with its chords and perfect dissonances. Tasos touch has been a constant inspiration as his approach is highly polyphonic. Tasos was born in Athens in 1965. He is a jazz fusion guitarist and composer with Seven released studio albums. His relationship with music began at the age of 10. Simultaneously, he played electric guitar in many rock groups. His interest in jazz began in 1985 and it would determine his future course. He is a musician that has dedicated his life’s works to music and performance. For further info, visit:

Pedro Villagra

Pedro Villagra on sax is a special one for me, not only for his majestic free jazz open wound playing but also because he is a personal friend and mentor, he played for several years with my father s band Inti-Illimani and has been my inspiration when on my teen years I would come to his house to play guitar and join the jam with him, so when Pedro agreed to play I was more than touched. Pedro is a Chilean flutist, saxophonist, guitarist and composer, recognized for being one of the founders of the band Santiago del Nuevo Extremo along with Luis Le-bert, having been part of the bands Inti -Illimani, and being one of those responsible for introducing the saxophone into Chilean folk music, based on his approach to jazz and the development of Latin American fusion since the end of the military dictatorship. As a soloist, he has a personal project called Pedroband, with which he has released seven studio albums. For contact visit:

Jamie Bullock

Jamie Bullock on Moog, Rhodes, Clavi, Organ and Piano, just broke it as usual, specially with his final solo on Piano, with that Afro Latin touch brings the whole song to the hights of the Fania All Star glory, which I personally love everything about. Jamie comes from a musical family playing piano since age 7, studied music at Virginia Tech University mentored by Chip McNeil. Since have recorded, composed and arranged for many artists across the USA, winning many awards for its work, he currently plays keyboards for Los Angeles funk rock band, Zen Robbi and The Gyrators, Outside composing, Jamie helped rebuild the Rhodes Music Corporation, bringing back the original Rhodes electric piano. He currently lives in London, United Kingdom. Here is a link to his work and music:

Allesio CAmpanozzi

Allesio Dippold on double bass did his best to blow my mind and he succeeded again. His improvisation and range of ideas is just wonderful. His IG account for further contact or info is:

Pablo Rozas

Pablo Rozas on Acordeon and synths brings the Piazzolla vibes, which I was looking for to imprint, Pablo is also a personal friend I met back in 2015 in Brazil, we have shared many jams and ceremonies. Argentinian musician Pablo Emmanuel Rozas has been a professional musician for over 20 years. He started studying the piano at age 9. At the age of 15, he began to fully dedicate himself to his music path, until he started travelling the world and developed as a multi-instrumentalist and music producer; finding his style and sound-integrating musical instruments typical of different cultures, and electronic tools, such as loop-stations and synthesizers, discovering the sound of electro-organic music (Experimental, Organic Downtempo), thus giving rise to a fusion between the spirit of Andean and Amazonian ancestral music, ceremonial, medicine music and the electronic groove. He considers dance and Music as Sacred Medicines. To link to his wonderful music, here:

Pablo Serrano

Pablo Serrano plays the cube sound drum solo at the end of the song. Pablo is a friend from my late teen years when we were sharing passion for metal and grunge music while performing with our first bands in Madrid back in the 90s. He was Born in Buenos Aires 1971, plays drums professionally since 1990. Graduated with honors in M.I. Los Angeles, also studied percussion and piano in Madrid EMC. Since 2003 he combines touring and performing with producing and composing music for image. For more info, visit:

Matias Coulon

Matias Coulon producer, composer, sound designer, djembe, hi hatz, harmonio and voice. Producing Fire Air has been nothing less than a sound orgasm. It is a canvas of moving pictures and scenes that kept me working till the last day on its 80 tracks to uncover all its treasures and find its proper placements. I completed the Piazzolla vibes by playing an Indian instrument called harmonio, which I made sound like a bandoneon. I also played a hi hat cajon drumming to bring a sense of live drumming to the loops. The overall work of equalizing everyone was an authentic challenge to me, especially at the end where the amount of sound palets defied my mental strength, two and a half years of work made it possible.

Producers

In this last year of producing I have been backed up by Jose Ascui as technical producer, giving me guidance on how to finilize the songs. José reside in Chile where he has an audio and musical production academy and studio. For contact and details visit:

Samaneri JayasAra

Samaneri Jayasāra spoken voice speech on Sri Ramana Maharshi text, On his own words, is the guiding star of the song. Hinduism is a big thing for me in the sense that invites us all to discover the inner spark of Godly experience that gives energy to our lives. I contacted Jayasāra to ask for permission for using her recording of the speech, and she and everyone at Viveka Hermitage was so kind and willing to expand the path of true knowledge and Dharma. Jayasāra initially ordained as an anagarikā (8-precept nun) in the Theravada Forest Tradition in 2002, living at both Dhammasara monastery in Western Australia and at Amāravati and Cittaviveka monasteries in the UK for 2 years. She re-entered the monastic life as a samaneri (10-precept nun) in 2018 at Santi Forest Monastery, where she helped to maintain and further develop Santi as a monastery for female monastics. In 2021, Jayasāra moved to Viveka Hermitage in southern NSW, to allow more focus on a growing online Dhamma project she had initiated, as well as to cultivate a more hermetic style of practice. Matias Coulon producer, sound designer, composer, arranger, playing hi hats and synths. I played some hi hats to bring some naturality to the automated beats and added some e bass and textures here and there. Only the Self Remains has been a gift of places and moods, very international in its becoming and in its inner textures, a long process to get the body ready and the organs working, an Intercellular connection for sure.

Only-the-Self-remains

us in time

Us in Time is my real first track into knowing how to ride such a dragon as an Intercellular Jazz Collective song. This track indeed reached the total amount of 125 tracks on its own and I can say I have managed to make it sound as a unified field of frequencies, intentions and emotions. This track was there since the beginning of the project and thou it was just chaos there was something about that psytrance beat along Mattias, Peter, Lyndon, and Bill Barley's impros that was taking me constantly back to see where I would go with it. Then, when Jesse Simmons came up with his speech and I started to feel the soul of the song emerging i fully committed to it as the fourth and glorious creation of the Collective to the world... Jay Jagannath

Allesio CAMPANOZZI

Allesio Campanozzi on electric bass, was the last one to record, the song was 99% finished, and it sounded flat as a 2D image, we tried hard to find the moment to record but work wouldn't allow it to happen, at the end, just few weeks before launch Alessio managed to find space for it, he couldn't record the double bass in his circumstances but as usual his touch is what gives the deepness to the song. Jimi Durso on Esraj, an indian violin, brought that raw desert gypsy north indian sound to the song, everything improvised in the moment as usual.

Uma Kala

Uma Kala as my dear Lotus filling of nectar my days as well as my song, her singing as usual brings the angelic feminine vibes, making us touch the suns of heavens with its purity. Uma is a multidisciplinary healing artist, dwelling in the elements of music, movement and food as her main medicine of life. Birthed with her Chinese name Hao Liyuan, Uma was born in Suzhou, China and grew up and lived most of her life in the tropical islands of Southeast Asia. Being ½ of artistic duo UMATI with me, Uma explores the element of sound through her voice as well as being on the decks as a DJ. With more than 12 years of experience as a DJ across Southeast Asia, Uma weaves shamanic drum with electronic genres including techno, tribal, downtempo and organic house, building her own unique following as DJ JUNGIRL, performing in ceremonial gatherings, holding spaces through Ecstatic Dance journeys, guiding others to express and heal through music and movement as medicine. Jesse simmons

I met Jesse on social media, interested in his spiritual journey I always felt drawn to his process, thinking and sharing. This special speech came up after he decided to take a break from public exposure, when he came back he recorded a video with his conclusions and I sampled it, what an amazing honest straight to the bone speech on how we feel those connected to source energy, thanks Jesse for your bravery.

Matias Coulon

Matias Coulon producer, sound designer, composer, arranger, playing hi hats, synths electric and acoustic guitar and singing the mantra. Producing and playing to this song has been such a healing in terms of self expression and confidence on my experience. Definitely the most cohesive song of the project in terms of sound and instrumentation.

Producers

With the experience of the first three song i have learned enough to be proud of the sound of this track, in addition i have counted again with the unvaluable collaboration of Luis Aros Vidal (Lucho) and José Angel Roig (Patxi), which the first as technical producer and the second as sound engeneer have mastered and fully finalized the song with me. “Estudios Bonus” is in Talamanca de Jarama, Spain, of the company Bonus Artes Audiovisual S. L.

Us-in-Time

Grand Landing

Grand Landing has been the culmination of a really hard work in terms of understanding the production skills required to give life to the Intercellular experience. As our last song of 2024 it is the maturation in terms of production and sound design. It started with an improv on trumpet and delay of Ralph Burrows on different major and minor scales that kept growing dramatically by each add of the rest of the Intercellular crew, pointing out the fact that this is the first song that the band has its own drummer, Mattia Caforio from Puglia, Italy. The name of the song definitely describes the moment of the project, after our statement of Us in Time we are landing as a collective, seeding our style and unique musical proposal into the fertile soil of our mother planet.

Musicians on this song:

Bill Bairley

Bill Bairley on analog synthesizers, pads, fxs and hammond sound keeps the tension of the flight and the friction of the inner planets colliding.
